Create/Edit Attribute Dimension: Levels

Defines the levels to include in the attribute dimension.

Use this page to specify attributes of the attribute dimension as levels for it. You may also specify the order of the values in a level and how to handle null values. You may then use the levels in the definition of a hierarchy.

Levels

The Levels section shows the name of a level, the expression that specifies the key attribute for the level, and the values for the caption and description classifications for the level.

To add a level to the attribute dimension:

  1. In the Levels section, click Add DIMENSION LEVEL (Add DIMENSION LEVEL).

A row for the level appears with a default name.

  2. Double-click the default name in the Name column and revise or replace the name for the level. If a related table exists, the other columns are populated automatically.

  3. Double-click the row in the KEY Attribute Expression column, expand the drop-down list and select an attribute.

  4. Optionally, click the row in the Caption column and revise or replace the caption.

  5. Optionally, click the row in the Description column and revise or replace the description.

To remove a level:

  1. In the Levels list, select a level.

  2. Click Remove DIMENSION LEVEL (Remove DIMENSION LEVEL).

To move a level up or down in the list:

  1. Select the level.

  2. Click the Up (Up) or Down (Down) arrow.

Level Properties

The Level Properties section shows the properties of the selected level and the expression that specifies the value for the current member of the level.

To specify an expression for a property of the level:

  1. From the Levels list, select a level.

  2. In the Level Properties list, double-click a row in the Expression column.

  3. Either expand the drop-down list and select an attribute or click the pencil icon and enter an expression in the Expression Editor to use as the property value.

Order By

The Order by field shows an attribute to use for ordering the level members. With the drop-down list next to that field, you can specify whether to display the members in ascending or descending order. You may specify more than one order by attribute for a level. Additional order by attributes are used as tie-breakers if the first attribute does not result in a unique ordering. If the first order by attribute is the key of the level then additional order by attributes have no effect because the values of the key (or alternate key) within the level are unique.

To specify the order of values in a level:

  1. In the Levels list, select a level.

  2. In the Order by field, expand the drop-down list and select an attribute.

  3. To have the values in ascending or descending order, select ASC or DESC from the drop-down list next to the Order by field.

The Null Values list specifies whether null values appear first or last in the ordering of members. To specify whether null values should appear first or last in the order, expand the Null Values drop-down list and select FIRST or LAST.

The Using list specifies whether to use the minimum value or maximum value of the attribute to order by.

To add an order by attribute for a level:

  1. From the Levels list, select a level.

  2. Click Add (Add Order By Attribute).

Another order by attribute row appears that has attribute selected. To change the attribute selection, click the field and select a different attribute.

Tor remove an order by attribute for a level:

  1. If you have more than one order by specification for a level, then from the Levels list, select the level.

  2. Click Remove (Remove Order By Attribute) in the row for the order by attribute to remove.

Skip Null Values

The Skip NULL Values option specifies whether to include or exclude null values in query results.

To not include null values in query results, select the Skip Null Values option.
